RiseBoro Education offers youth and adults in north Brooklyn more than a place to go: it's a place where they can discover their true potential. For more than three decades, our education and youth development programs have taken a holistic approach that provides youth and adults with the space, skills and support they need to succeed, no matter what their obstacles are. We believe that the individuals we work with every day are the key to building thriving communities for this generation and the next.

DYCD Discretionary Program

This program facilitates the operation of the RiseBoro Youth Center during the evening and weekend hours.

Funding allows us to provide the following activities:

Recreational Programming including basketball, volleyball and fitness classes.

Black and white photography classes -students learn black and white film skills including 35 mm camera techniques, processing, test strips, contact sheets and negative enlargement. Students complete photo assignments and then process and print their own pictures. This exciting class is offered in our Youth Center’s darkroom.

Music Lessons – Individual lessons will provided to teach basic skills in youths chosen instrument. Instruction will be provided in guitar, piano, drums and bass.

Beacon/​Advantage/​Empire State Program at I.S. 562

The Beacon/Advantage program provides a wide variety of academic, creative, social-emotional, and recreational activities for the young people we serve.

  • Elementary school aged youth focus on homework assistance and recreational activities.
  • Middle school participants make their own schedules, choosing from a wide variety of project-based literacy, STEM, and arts activities, (including Drama, Sports Journalism, Song Writing, Music Production, Computer Animation, Science Club, and many more), as well as several physical activities (Martial Arts, Dance, Sports, Fitness, Gym and Yoga).
  • All participants also take part in community service projects, Showcase performances, and field trips throughout the year. Recreational programming is offered to high school youth and adults during the evening hours.

Funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (NYC DYCD) and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and the NYC Department of Education Office of Community Schools. This program is available to students between the ages of 6 and 13, teens, and adults.

Compass After-School Program @ P.S. 86

This comprehensive after-school program incorporates positive youth development principles such as ensuring the safety and health of our youth, providing adult role models, empowering youth, integrating the family school and community, and offering opportunities for youth to develop individual skills and competencies. Activities offered include academic instruction, STEM, workshops, individual and group counseling, recreation, theatre arts, music, homework assistance and tutoring.

SUMMER CAMP

The Compass summer camp provides educational, recreational and cultural enrichment.

 

This program is funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (NYC DYCD) and is available to students in grades K through 5th.

Extended School Day/​Advantage Program at I.S. 349

This after-school program provides a wide variety of academic, creative, social-emotional, and recreational activities for the young people we serve. Participants make their own schedules, choosing from a wide variety of project-based literacy, STEM, and arts activities, (including Drama, Sports Journalism, Song Writing, Music Production, Computer Animation, Science Club, and many more), as well as several physical activities (Martial Arts, Dance, Sports, Fitness, Gym and Yoga). This program is funded by the New York State Education Department and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and is available to students in grades 6th – 8th.

School-based SONYC

SONYC (School’s Out NYC) at All City Leadership Secondary School serves as a pathway to success for youth in 6th, 7th and 8th grades. SONYC programs provide middle school youth with the support of caring adults and offer engaging, fun activities during the afterschool hours. We provide students with activities and clubs such as Homework Assistance, Tutoring, Sports, STEM, Creative Writing, Arts& Crafts, field trips and many more.

Our SONYC program is designed to support these goals:
1. Foster academic, social, and emotional competencies and physical well-being in a safe and nurturing environment.
2. Provide opportunities for youth to explore their interests and creativity.
3. Build skills that support academic achievement and raise participant expectations and confidence.
4. Cultivate youth leadership and community engagement.
5. Engage parents and other caretakers to support the above goals.
